6.3 FAULT TRACING BEFORE CONTACTING THE RETAILER
To prepare before contacting the Travel Power representative the points
below should be worked through:
1. Are all connectors in connection and all socket screws well tightened? It
should be noted if there is a voltage drop at smaller loads the shielded
cable connectors could be unproperly connected.
2. If point 1 is considered to be sufficient, loosen the cable (the 2 and 3-pole
connectors) from the Power box. Measure the resistance between all the
outlets in the 3-pole cable connector. The resistance between two of the
outlets should be 5 ±5 %. The resistance between the outlets in the 2-
pole cable connector should be 3.5 ±10 %.
3. If short-circuit (0 ) or infinitely resistance is measured in any of the
measurements done in point 2 the shielded cable must be checked with
respect to proper connection to the generator. If the connection is OK then
dismantle the cable from the generator. Thereafter, measure the windings
in the generator as follows through to the socket connection shown in
Figure 7.
- The resistance between socket connections 1-2, 2-3, 3-1 should be
5 ±5 %.
- The resistance between socket connection 4-5 should be 3.5 ±10 %.
- Measure also the resistance between the generator housing and any of
the cables 1,2 or 3 and any of the cables 4 or 5. The resistance should
be over 1 M to have sufficient isolation between winding and earth.
If any resistance value is incorrect the generator must be exchanged.
However, if all measurements are correct, a careful control of the shielded
cable should be done. There could be a short-circuit or an interruption in
the cable. Measure each cable part from both ends and at the same time,
twist and turn the cable to see any possible faults. Also measure between
the cable parts to detect any short-circuit.
4. If none of the above points gives an indication of faults the Power box also
should be tested for fault. Please carefully check the following points:
4.1. Make sure that both the shielded cable connectors (2 and 3-pole
connectors) are disconnected from the Power box.
4.2. Apply 12 V (DC) plus and minus (from a standard battery) onto two of
the three pins in the 3-pole contact on the Power box. NOTE never
connect any voltage to the 2-pole contact on the Power box.
4.3. On the 230 V outlet socket an AC voltage between 8 to 10 volt should
be measured. Put also 12 V onto the third pin in the 3-pole contact on
the Power box to ensure that 8 to 10 volts is achieved.
If the output voltage is not between 8 – 10 V the Power box should be
exchanged.
